whats the best pleco to put with cichlids that will not get botherd that much and wil defend its self or run and hide on its own???

i was told at my lps the common one is the best
i also was told that royal and brissle nosed plecos would work, but some one at that store said they are the worst due to ph and they are to shy???

Everything I've been told is Bushy/Bristle nose plecos or Rubber lipped plecos. Problem with the common pleco is it gets to big. The Bristle nose plecos and Rubber lipped plecos only get around 5 inches so are good for life. Hope that helps.

Bubba, to be perfectly honest with you, It is so risky putting any kind of pleckos in the tank with cichlids. You never know if it is going to work or not. Its always a 50/50 kind of thing. Remember, what may work for one doesnt mean its going to work for you. If you are dead set on putting one in the tank, I would put it in and then watch really carefully at how the cichlids react. If within just a couple hours the cichlids start going after it, take it back to the store. I know my cichlids would tear anything up in my tank that is not cichlid and thats being to nice. They go after eachother sometimes too and I have to do timeouts. I have heard horror stories from some about pleckos in the tank and then others say they never had a problem. I have also heard the same thing about large snails, that the fish wont hurt them so I bought two and guess what, I have to keep them in a different tank. Every now and then I put them back in the cichlid tank in hopes that they will change their minds because just like humans, they do change their minds. If you do decide yes, then I would find the biggest one your tank can support. Good luck.

I only answered the first part of his question. What's the best pleco. I should of clarified at the end that it's a crap shoot with just about anything you put into your tank. Cichlids, Pleco's, Plants, Heck even Rocks, ask Rob. My bad on that one. Cichlids just have a nasty disposition. That's what makes them so interesting.

And I am sorry because I knew you were asking and the same answer applies to all pleckos. Like LeeAnn has had good luck with the bristle nose but I know someone else that said just the opposite. The common pleckos too. There was another one but I can't remember the name, anyhow it was the same sinereo(sp). One said good in tank the other said no way! Sorry. Think it's just one of those things you have to figure out on your own hon.

Had a great idea though, you could do a poll on the ones you think would do best. Which ever got the highest vote would be your choice, doesn't mean its the right choice though Razz

Amen to that! I mean I tryed Loaches and they tore them apart within minutes so that didnt work. My common pleco I've had for 4 years now, its grown to about 8 inches and my Cichlids leave it be as he was in the tank before the cichlids even arrived. He hides out during the day and when the cichlids sleep at night, my pleco takes over. Call it the grave yard shift, none the less the tank is my pleco's at night noone mess's with him Smile

Another good tank mate witch is also a "crap shoot" would be Synodontis cats or any cats for that matter. I got lucky they gett along great!!

Bristle nose are fine once they are not too small. The have a high tolerance to a high pH. I also have s Royal pleco in mine.
Most good sized plecos wont take any s++t from a cichlid.

Why don`t you go for Synos. Commom plecos get too big and produce tons of waste.

All plecos are shy. Even the big common ones. The common ones can be more sensitve to pH than the others.
Bristle nose are fine. Most Plecos are fine once they do not suffer a big change in pH from were you bought them.

I find my common pleco to be fine with the PH adjustment, never showed stress/ illness hes been going back and forth though tanks for a good 4 years now. Hes a good 10 inches in my 90 gallon now with my "red belly Piranhas" so that he adjusted NP from a PH of 8.2 -6.8 in no time

I traded in my Common Pleco and got a couple of Bushy nose Pleco's. The Common Pleco was at the 8" mark. I wanted to cut down on the large waste produced by a Pleco of that size. Especially with the overstocking practice employed to cut down and disperse aggresion. That's why I opted for the Bushy nose Pleco's seeing as they only reach the 5" mark.
