my yellow lab has a bulge right at her va jj she is the only adult yellow lab inthe tank all the other labs are just babies. so is she able to breed with the other breeds of fish in the tank the picture i have isnt the best but you can see her little bulge. so im wondering is she pregnant or is it something else she is also becoming very terrortorial but i havnt noticed her paired off with any of the other fish

From my experience they don't have behavior change. The bottom of the mouth (Throat) will drop noticeable. You can always look at other fish in your aquarium and notate the difference. Smile Cool!

Picture is a bunch of happy fishes. Photo was edited! (Red Zebra's are not white and orange)

Kaleb,

yellow labs are only paired during spawning.

as far as the bulge goes, I can't really see it but do see her face is a little swollen.

If she is holding, they could still be eggs and in that case, you would notice her rolling them in her mouth.

Is she eatting? If not, then she is most likely holding.

As far as her breeding with other species, it is possible but not regular behavior. How old are the babies already there? Are you sure they aren't old enough to breed? I have 1.5-2.00 inch yellow labs carrying right now. Wouldn't think they are old enough but they are. Yellow labs physically grow at a much slower rate than other african cichlids.

Does her face morph to a dirty looking state? This is the only behavioral change you should be noticing. Her face will turn dirty looking to indicate she is stressed or being protective.

Also she wont get as large as other african cichlids. Most yellow labs their first time brooding will only carry 8-10 babes. While they are eggs the mother appears smaller until the eggs hatch and the babies start feeding off the inside of her mouth. After approx. 9 days of holding eggs, you will be able to see eyes in her mouth. Hope this helps

P.S. a handy tip

When ever taking a picture with a flash, try holding camera from an angle, not directly at the aquarium.

Or you can shut off all outside lights, and just use the aquarium lights. This usually works if the glass is clean.

I have never used a flash to take pictures of the fish.

ok, here is the problem, if there is a buldge on her stomach, that is not pregnancy. Most malawi cichlids are mouth brooders. They carry their eggs and young in their mouths. Where exactly did you notice a buldge on her stomach?
Was it right near the small fin under the belly, called the anal fin? If it was right infront or behind it, it was most likely Malawi Bloat which means too much feeding of protien. If it was red and looked like a sore pimple, that was an ulcer. Either one is capable of going away after a few days but make no mistake, Malawi Bloat can be fatal 50 percent of the time. What kind of food and how often are you feeding them?

yes but I personally have never seen a buldge big enough to be considered a buldge from eggs. That doesn't mean it can't be. I guess it would depend on how big the fish is and how many eggs it has. Well if the buldge is gone and your fish is eating then I guess everything seems to be ok.

Good luck

So i just thouht i would throw my two cents out there in my experience you can tell when they are holding. Like the others wrote they wont eat unless they are very skilled mothers and they wont eat the way they did before pregnancy. they will just suck in the smallest pieces. Secondly there throat will slowly swell every day. My first yellow lab had about 20 fish the first time i striped her.

all fishy things are awesome
