Without knowing what kind of fish it is, we can't tell and some fish, even if you know what they are, it's impossible to tell until they start spawning.

Sorry, didn't catch that earlier
Ok with electric yellow labs, they have to be three quarters full size to really be able to distinguish.
The females are generally smaller and not as vibrant yellow.
Females also have a slighter lesser black line on the dorsal fin or perhaps none at all.
Females also have way less black on the pectoral fins
The males fullgrown will show their rich dark black dorsal line and the pectoral fins under the fish will also be very rich black.
Some say that the male also has a straight completely attached black dorsal line where as the female's is somewhat pokeadoted black and white at the very top. I am not sure that is completely accurate but have seen it in a few of mine.
I'm going to go see if I can find some pics of comparisons for you.

Ok here is a really good example. Notice the five o'clock shadow on the male. The female can also get what's called a dirty face (morphing) while she is protecting the offspring.
Note that not all males show a five o'clock shadow, that is usually the dominant male that shows that. What you really have to pay attention to is the color of the fins
