hi im needing help on what sort of rocks i can put in my new tank and im getting some from my local beach as i had a freind who used to get them for his tank but has sadly moved on plz help as cant afford shop prices thanks

You can use almost any rocks you want except for green rocks that may have copper in them or rocks that have metal flaky looking things in them.
I would also be careful not to put anything too sharp in the tank as cichlids are known for rubbing up against things, having a startle which can send them flying into objects etc. The rocks can cut. A lot of stores now sell glass rocks for the aquarium. I would be very careful with something like that.
You will have to boil them to clean any kind of biological growth or bacteria or parasite that may be growing on them or in little crevices that you cant see. Just hard boil for about 5 minutes. Let cool for a few hours before putting them into aquariums.
Same goes for any kind of driftwood, however I would be sure to ask if driftwood coming off the beach will retain any salt. I don't have the answer to that. If it does retain salt, then I don't think you could use it. But if you wanted to get driftwood from the beach of a lake or petstore, you just boil it for a few minutes.
