Somehow the glass top on the tank fell half way down and the fish jumped out at some point during the nite.

A 50 dollar fish down the drain. All I can hope for is the female is brooding but I can't tell right now. Her and the male had just started to spawn.

I'm so upset with myself over this. I know it couldn't have been helped but still, I'm very upset and angry.

On a happier note, I did purchase two new fish yesterday. I am not sure what they are though.

My guess is a Pseudotropheus demasoni or saulosi. They are still quite small only an inch in length so it's hard to say which of the two they are. They are most likely the demansoni.

We are calling the mom/pop shop were purchased the red empress and see if she has any more. If so I will be getting a new one today. I took a good look at the female red empress and I don't think she is carrying. I may also get a second female red empress or two julies while I am there.

I am sorry to hear about your Red Empress! It is kind of surprising how you can become attached to individual fish. I have one little Melanochromis auratus (I think) who will come over to me every time I walk by the tank. At first I thought it was just because he is ALWAYS hungry, but now I think it is just because he likes me (he even hangs out by me after they have all eaten). I love that little guy. At the same time I have two jewel fish that I really have no love for. Being new to Cichlids, is surprising how different each individual can be, they really have personality.

As for your new fish, isn't it fun to get new fish! That is what is so cool about cichlids, they are so many to have and experiment with!

I am spending about two hours a day on line reading and learning about what new fish to get.

Yes it is true that you can get attached to a specific fish. I have a special fondness with my male kenya. He is a beaut and my oldest cichlid. I was more upset with the empress because he costed me so much money. Now I have to fork out another 50.00 for another one. They are also very beautiful fish and I had had him for about 4 or 5 months. My male kenya is named Kenny. I only give my special fish names. Funny I have 11 parakeets now and only attached to one and they all have names. My favorite one is Henry. He is the most vocal and even talks to himself. I named him after King Henry VIII. It suits him very well. Thanks for your response.

Sorry about your fish.

On the Demasoni. You can either keep 1 or 15 or more. Two in a tank will annialate each other.

Good to know Anthony, Thanks. Will keep that in mind when I go shopping for more fish. The only reason I even got them is because someone was practically giving them away on craigslist.

Sorry about your empress. We were attached to ours the moment we bought them and they all have names. Even the ghost knife we got yesterday had a name before we went to bed.

Good luck with your new ones.

I bought two juvies before and within a week I was left with one. They will not bother other fish, just themselves. Thats why the more the merrier.

Right, I have been watching them all day. I am planning on putting one in the community tank and leaving one in the 29 gal with some other juvies just until I can find some more. You know, I knew about these fish being like that but totally spaced it, so I am glad you refreshed my memory.

Thanks again.

Here are some pics of the new fish, you tell me whether you think they are Demasoni. Remember these fish are just barely an inch long, they have been in the same tank for 3 days now and haven't seen any aggression toward eachother yet

I know the pics aren't that good of quality but just bare with my camera. The pics are large and by the time I crop them and resize, this is how they come out. Sorry. Let me know what you think.

Hey Anthony, do you think I could get away with putting one in the community tank now? I have other juvies in the tank, some like the red zebras are only 1.5 inches long and they seem to be doing fine but thought I was just lucky. I also have two 1 inch kenyi in there and they are fine too. What do you think?

I did manage to find a third today but man the pickings are slim around these parts. You would think me coming from the nations 5th largest city that we would have every fish that is available. No it seems just the opposite but I did find a full grown melanochromis johanni female for my male. Now he has two ladies to chase around but they are in isolation for now. But she looks nothing like the other female johanni. I am was worried about him killing the first female as she was the only one and seemed stressed out from all the love the male was trying to give Rolling Eyes
