Hi everyone,

I got a new fish from the store today. I generally will only buy fish if I know what they are, but this one was so pretty. It was in a general Malawi Cichlid tank and I am sure it is a mbuna of some sort. I suspect it might be a hybrid, but have no idea what. It has a very intense orange belly, strong blue body with orange glow, and yellow dorsal and tail fins. The pictures actually don't do it justice. Can anyone help me identify it?

I have no idea how to upload more than one photo, but here are links to three pictures of it:

Thanks so much,

I believe this is a Pseudotropheus "variable kande"

however in my book it shows it having lots more egg spots and says "It's distribution seems to be restricted to the island."-
Ad Konings author of Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat 3rd Edition.

This fish does best resemble your fish out of all the fish in the book. This book is a little outdated and there could be a new variant found since the book was first published.

Also keep in mind, it could be a hybrid and that could explain the very few egg spots. I tried to do a google search for this and even though I found many list with this fish in it, none had pictures to compare with. You may want to do your own search through another search engine, also check out the Pseudotropheus "cyaneus" and the Ps. "daktar" These fish also resemble your fish a little. It's worth checking them out on the web.

Hi Malawi Mother,

Thanks for the help. I do see a similarity with the Pseudo. Kande. Someone else suggested a Lab. Hongi and specifically a Super Red Hongi. Here are some pictures of it:

Thanks again,

Yea I would say it's one of the two you found pictures on more than the one I found in the book. You want to look closely at the shape of the mouth to determine which one it is.

Good luck
