I have a sweet pair of these thanks to a good friend of ours, and am finally, after some months, setting up a 20 long with the hopes of breeding them.
I haven't breed much of anything outside rifters, and my water is pretty hard... anybody have any suggestions as to what I can use for tank decor (and should not use) and dither fish?

Hi Lee Ann,
Tank decor is actually quite easy. You can use lots of driftwood and flower pots. Just make sure you have a spot in there the female can lay eggs on the roof of and that the male can't get into. Plants are good. (to make it look nicer imo)
The driftwood should also help with your pH. You could also try adding peat to help lower the pH as well. If it is around 7 there should be no problem.
As far as dithers go, guppies are a good choice. Lots of people like using tetras. Just remember that if they do spawn, you may have to remove the fry as the other fish will think of the fry as dinner on the run. (I know you know this! ). Hope this helps.Lisa & Ken

FEEDERS?!?!?!?! How about some nice Nile Perch for your Viccie tank Gas? Dwarf cichlids are great and I bet Lee Ann will agree with me! Besides we don't kill defenceless little dwarf cichlids Lisa & Ken

Best driftwood would be from the petstore as they've treated it already and it should be ready for immediate use. Of course this is also the most expensive way. You can use driftwood you find on beaches or shores as long as you know it's not evergreen (pine, etc) or the like and you of course need to treat it so you can use it in your tank.Lisa & Ken

Thanks to our skilled daughter, Karli, we now have a few pics of the taeniatus that were taken shortly after adding some dither fish to the tank. I'm sold on the use of dithers now... before, they would never ever come out of hiding.

And now for some pictures....
WE HAVE FRY!!!
These are all pictures of the male. Note the bivalve shell with the hole in it... it's too small for him to get through, but the female can, and that's where they spawned.
Here are some pictures of the pair with their fry:
