My sister in law brought me 4 young cichlids out of her tank along with a more mature blue cichlid (I'm not sure what type). Anyhow, the blue fish has been in her tank for a couple years and has some battle scars (partially missing an eye). In the tank I had a jeweled, jack dempsey (??) and two large blood fin parrots. Blue now is harrassing my two parrots (they're my favorites) and has them cornered throughout most of the day so that they rarely come out and swim. I rearranged the rocks and plants with the new arrivals and the smaller fish have done well except for blue and my parrots. I was thinking of putting blue in my outdoor pond, will he survive? I have large goldfish in the pond, will he mess with them?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Cool not sure if you have to have the same type of cichlid to mate? plus my orange one looks like its house cleaning moving rocks around. any suggestions on why it might be doing this?

Hi all

I have recently set up an African cichlid tank in my new Juwel Rio125 tank and I'd like any advice/comments regarding my selection of fish and setup.

I have the tank stocked with the following:

• A single princess (Neolamprologus brichardi), who is currently the dominant fish.

• A single julidochromis marlieri, who is one step below the princess.

• Four Electric Yellows (Labidochromis caeruleus), who are one step below the princess and tolerate the julidochromis marlieri.

• A pair of Steatocranus tinanti, who are new. These fish are agreeable with the other inhabitants, except at feeding time when they fight with the electric yellows. The princess hated these fish, most especially the larger one.

• A pair of Cuckoo catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus) who aren't bothered by anyone.

• A single Bristle nose catfish who isn't bothered by anyone.

All fish are small at the moment, except for the princess (almost fully grown) and the cuckoo catfish are about three inches long). They get along well, except for occasional bickering and there have not been any injuries from fights etc. I am only really concerned about my two cuckoo's as one is new and the older one seems to pick on it a bit. I hope they get along better soon.

Although the tank is small (80cm by 33cm floor space), I have it well furnished with two pieces of Texas Holey Rock, other assorted rocks, and a couple piles of oyster shells. So, there's lots of hiding places. The substrate is sand and so with this combination of rocks and fish, especially the Texa holey rock and electric yellows, it looks like a marine tank.

I also have two bunches of vallisneria sp., which have been recently added and I'm quite happy for these to be eaten and I'll replace them regularly if this is the case. I have several anubias plants and a number of java ferns.

My questions are:

• Are there any foreseeable problems?

• Have I already over stocked the aquarium? If not, will it be so when the fish grow?

• Is there a blue coloured fish cichlid that I could add that would get along with all the other occupants? A cichlid that grows to about 12cm max? What about Pseudotropheus Socolofi?

• Also, can someone explain the water hardness thing? When I measure my water for carbonate hardness it takes six drops and for other hardness it takes 23. So, is the total hardness 23 and the carbonate hardness 6 (or does one have to subtract one from the other etc)?

• Is my water hardness OK? My pH is about 7.4 and I intend to increase this to about 8.0 using carbonate (cause I also want to increase my carbonate hardness).

• Is there any room left for a small (3-4 fish) of shell dwellers?

• Should I add additional princess and/or julidochromis marlieri or are these two fish happy on their own?

Finally, the tinatis are special. I truly recommend them. Also the interaction of the tinatis and the electric yellows is especially fun to watch at feeding time.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Glenn

I need an expert opinion on this because I am starting an African cichlid breeding project in Kuwait and my source of water is salty , not to the extend of sea water but it is salty , I have got some breeding groups from Thailand and the seams to do ok in this water so far but they have not had any fry yet. I am starting to think that the salty water have an effect on their breeding activity. Dose it ?

I cant find what species these fish are, I have one male and one female. The female just had released about 20 fry. The fry are orange. The parents are brown with faint black vertical stripes going from back to belly. The have a long dorsal fin running almost the length of the body and their heads almost look "stubby." Any help is much appreciated.index.php/fa/1378/0/

As of October 1, 2008 I Rohnda Pagan aka Malawi Mother will be signing off of africancichlids.net permanently. I will no longer be answering question or greeting newbies.

Due to lots of circumstances that are out of my control, I have found that there is just not enough hours in one day to have a normal life. Because of the house fire, I had to sell my aquarium and fish due to space issues and had to buy what ever was not donated to us leaving us a bit in the red financially.

I have enjoyed meeting all of you and helping you through your fishie problems as well as seeing your beautiful aquarium setups. I would encourage all of you including the newbies to please take advantage of the search bar at the top of the page. I use it a lot when someone asks a question and I relay the info found in the search bar back to the questionee. Sometimes it's just a matter of your wording to find the right answer in the search bar so keep trying if you don't succeed the first time.

I hope you all find the same satisfaction here that I did when I first started here at africancichlids.net. I learned a great deal and loved passing that knowledge around. Take care my friends and take care of your fish. They depend on you to keep them healthy and happy.

Remember to research fish before you buy them. Remember don't flush when they get sick. If you have to put them down, use the oil of clove and water trick to put them to sleep gently. You can search it here in the search bar for more details.

Remember to feed them a flake a couple times a day with perhaps a pellet once a day and a veggie such as romaine lettuce 1-2 times a week.

Also to do 25-33 percent water changes once a week and to use a dechlorinator with each water change.

Water parameters should be 0ppm (parts per million) on the Ammonia and nitrites, and 10-15 on the nitrates. pH values should be anywhere from 7.6-8.6 and temp should be between 75-80 degrees.

Remember to have lots of hiding and oxygen circulation in the tank.

If your fish do not get along, remove bully for a time out for a couple days or longer. If bully still harrasses, you may have to replace him permanently.

Remember to not mix continental fish. No South Americans with African cichlids or no Central American fish with African cichlids. Remember that the common pleckos has a 50/50 chance with african cichlids and that it also gets very large and requires lots of food as it gets larger which also means it creates more waste. Think about these things before you purchase them.

Signs of illness are, staying at the top of water with little movement or hiding under a HOB (hang on back) filter, staying at the bottom of the tank at the gravel site with little movement, turning lighter colors such as white or pale. Swollen stomach area (usually Malawi Bloat), no evacuation for several days, red sores, black specks that seem to be reproducing, stringy things hanging from fish's body, cloudy eyes usually means it got bit in the eye by another fish and they do this a lot. It will clear in a few days. Swollen eye means popeye and fish can lose an eye. Then there is stress. If a fish is being bullied, living in bad water environment or is not getting required food, fish can become sick with any of the things mentioned above. Stress is the number one killer amongst aquarium fish. Not that it actually kills your fish but it starts out without you even knowing it and usually turns to an illness. It's important to watch your fish carefully. Check them each day to make sure they are healthy and happy. If you see your fish having any of these signs, do a search here or ask in the forum under the illness tab. If it's an emergency, I suggest you do the search first. You may find your answer is just one click away and save yourself a couple days that could be vital for your fish.

Remember to research before you buy and Good luck as always,

Rohnda.

P.S. If there is an emergency, you can email by clicking on my name anywhere in this site. Please remember though, this is just for emergencies.

I am just curious. Does anyone know about these fish? I know they are endemic to Madagascar and they are very rare to have in an aquarium. There is someone in my area selling them in pairs. They have breeded them. I have googled them and get the same info that I just typed. But other then the people of Madagascar eat them, I haven't found a whole lot of info on them.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new and would like some help IDing two of my fish. I believe they are Africans. I got them from a friend and I'm trying to get a comfortable home for them here in one of my tanks. If you have any idea what it might be just let me know. The other one is the same but a little more of a lavendar color. The tank they are in is a little to small and crowded for them. Their colors are very bright at the moment and they seem to be doing some kind of fishy slap and tickle. No fin biting just lots of snuggling. Here is a picture of the darkest one.

hey guys,

my tank is finally cycled. the raw fish really wasn't working. i waited two weeks without fish just waiting for raw fish to rot in my tank. i read about bio-spira. it really works. i emptied my tank and started over. with the new tank i make sure the temp was correct and the ph was correct. i purchased bio-spira from lfs and 10 small cichlids. my tank cycled in four days while having fish to look at. all the fish is nice and healthy. none of them died. really good product.

I'm back for awhile. Hope all has been good in my absence. Sorry about not getting to my private messages right away but I did answer them now. If anyone still needs help let me know. Let me fill you in for those who haven't seen me before. They call me Mother here. I have a 115 gal tank with approx 40 fish. I also have a 29 gal with two monsters that I have recently named Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. I had to take them out of my 115 malawi tank. They are also malawi but they are mixed that I got from someone off Craigslist. I also have a breeder tank with 25 sunshine peacock babies, about 3 weeks old. I have raised quite a few batches of babies, all malawis. Today we added a new long awaited fish to the 115 gal. A male electric blue ahli. I have had two females for the longest time but didn't want to add a full grown male due to possible aggression problems. So I found a two incher today that is the prettiest blue. He is doing fine in my tank. I have 15 mixed socolofi/kenyi They are a mix from my male kenyi and my female socolofi. I have two kenyi, male and female, 9 electric yellow labs, one is the mother. One female auratus that looks like a male but know she is a female because she gave me 25 babies. I got rid of the male before the babies were born. He was way to aggressive. I also have a multi colored peacock which is just beautiful, 2 OB peacocks, 2 Johanies, one fe and one male. Still waiting on them to give me a batch. They are young though. About 8 or so months, The three ahlis, a bumble bee which is one of my very first fish, 3 red zebras, one of which is a cherry red. And two Kribs. I may have missed a few, can't keep track of all them. I have tried tons of other fish and have made lots of trades till I got it right. These fish work great together. I have lots of hiding. I have done quite a bit of research on the malawi cichlids and have lots of experience. I was a moderator on here but then had to leave for awhile. Things here at home have calmed down quite a bit so I will try to help out as much as I can. I will admit that I don't like to be on the computer much these days, so I will try to get on atleast once a day to answer any questions. I would like to say howdy to all my friends, cichlidfinatic aka Rob, Bubba and the rest of you. You know who you are.

Hi All
I have had my tank set up for four months now and all is still going well. I have started seeing baby fish swimming around but I do not know which fish they have come from as I haven't noticed any breeding activity. They are growing very quickly and seem to look very much like the fish in the attached photograph. Can anyone tell me what it is please?
Thanks

Hello all!

I just came from the fish store and I really would like to aviod spending 3.00 - 4.00 dollors a pound on stone for my 55g aquarium.

My Mother's husband said to go to the local stone quarry and get some Lannon stone and that I would pay less the 1.00 a pound there.

So my question is, is Lannon stone from Wisconsin safe for my beloved Cichlid tank??

Thanks all,

Your friend in fish,

Walter

HOW TO CLEAR CLOUDY TANK WATER?

there are numerous posts by my self/ Malawi mother on help to fix this problem.

The most helpful is on tanks/filtering section posted by none other than MM herself. post shows proper ways to "CYCLE" the tank before fully stocking it to avoid cloudiness. In case if you don't already know the cloudiness is: ALGAE BLOOM its not harmfull it will pass not to worry just a part of the cycling process.

read that post thouroughly and pracitce it- it will cure any problem regarding cloudiness. That or you could hit up your local LFS and purchase Algae away or cloudy removal....

GOOD LUCK hope that helps for further question drop me a line

I am having some post removed from Texas Holey Rocks to here. They are mostly post with a few pictures questioning the type of fish in the pic. There is nothing being removed that shouldn't be removed. It will take a few days.

In the future, lets try to make new topics when leading away from the orignial authors thread title. I myself am guilty of this.

Thank You

Did you know that spawning is the same thing as transferring of eggs. Shocked I always thought 'spawning' was the before time of transferring of eggs Laughing My daughter says, "Now don't you feel dumb?!"
I was talking about the fish spawning and she said, "what is spawning?" I said, "it's the flirting part of a courtship" She in turn said, " so if I am at the mall and I was hanging out with friends could I say 'hey I'm going to go spawn with so and so?" Laughing She is like that. I said, "well lets look it up on line and see if it is directed to just animals or to every living creature" I was very surprised to see that it was the actual time of laying eggs and directed only to creatures that live in water. And who says you eventually stop learning?

So you will notice in my past post I may have used the word 'spawning' wrongly. Embarassed

I have a fairly new (May 2006) 55 gallon tank. I have set it up and added cheap fish to get the cycle going. I recently tried to add fish for the first time since initial set up and they are dying. The ph is stuck around 8.4. I have tried to treat for two weeks with chemicals waiting 48 hours in between treatments. It is not budging. I have been told that I might want to consider African Cichlids as they tolerate a higher ph well. Any advice?

He appears to be the same fish pictured on containers of TetraCichlid sticks. I'd like to know if anyone recognizes him..I want to be able to look up information on him. =)

He's very small. Maybe 2 inches in length.

Thanks!

Johanni ( Melanochromis) this is a beautiful fish to watch grow. The parent fish do a good job of birthing. The problem is the little fry will chase other fry.I have other fish putting out fry but none make it due to the Johanni fry eating them.I started with 6 Johanni and now have about 20.Its time for me to get rid of some back to the Aquarium store. I have a 37 gallon tank. Filtration is an emporer 280. PH is 8.2 to 8.4. Ammonia is never over .25 ppm. I have several plastic decorations and some real red lava rocks. The fish have plenty of caves. I have seven juvenile fish in the tank. They are 1 yellow labido, 1 peacock, 1 birchardi, 1 red zebra, 1 elongatus, 1 unidentified african cichlid and the 1 electric blue hap ahli. All fish appear very healthy except the hap ahli. He(she?) has a constant gulping behavior and his eyes appear to be slightly bulgy (maybe more than slightly). I feed once a day as much as they can eat in approximately 2 minutes. When I first started the tank, I believe I was over feeding which caused the ammonia level to go to .50 ppm. However, after regualting the feeding, the ammonia is steady under .25 ppm. I also had a pumice stone in the tank at one point. It seemed to make the water cloudy, so I removed it and added some plastic decorations instead.

Has anyone ever heard of a hap ahli with this problem (or is it a problem at all)? Please help. Thanks.

Lost 2 fish and I know the problem.Son gave me the koi food he feed his koi and cichlids. Its small and very hard.I thought today i would try it and so i did.Wish I had not due to the fish loaded up.One had at least 20 pellets in his mouth.I thought it would be ok and get soft.It takes a long time for this stuff to get soft.I came back and found 2 fish one dead and the other flopping around on the bottom.I got it out but it was already dead.I have for 3 months been feeding Tetra big flakes.lost a breeder female albino zebra. The other was a caeruleus one of 6 I have.Word of warning watch out what you feed your fish.

Hey all. I've been keeping fish for a while had an oscar for 11 years and then a morey, jack dempsy and auratus for six more, but discovered that mixing fish and hoping they work is a poor idea. I have a 29 gallon tank, penguin 330 biowheel, airating powerhead, an aquaclear heater, natural colored gravle and various plants. Currently in this tank are four pictus cats, and a male green terror. I would like to add a couple chinese algae eaters. My question on this is, can I do this without overcrowding or is the green terror already to big of a cichlid and going to outgrow the tank. I've seen on many sites where they get 12" and on others where it's 6" for males and am not sure which is accurate. If I can't keep the terror in there forever, can I go with a electric blue hap male? I know he's not a digger and love the colors or maybe a jahani instead if the hap is to big for a 29. Preferable I can just keep the terror and all is well with 5 fish and maybe the algae eaters.

Sorry but there is a second question. I also have a GF with a 125 gallon and a C. Venezuela pike cichlid and an irrodecent shark. What other fish can be put in this tank for permanent tankmates for these to fish. The more colorfull the better. Thanks for the help.

If anyone is interested i can post pics of this filter I made.I have used it several years and its a great filter.I have a fish room so its behind the tank out of sight. Its about 2.5 feet high and maybe 16 inches round. Its an old fiberglass cylinder the Koi people use to spray some type of chemicle in their ponds. Its not poison because the fish are in the pond. This guy threw it out and I saw it in his trash pile and grabbed it.The system works like a big Eheim filter.I clean this thing every 6 months.Works great.Bottom full of bio balls about 1/3 of tank, then the next 1/3 filter floss then the last third Carbon in a panty hose leg.Two filler hoses gravity feed to cylinder pushed back to tank by a giant pump.Great set up.Keeps 125 tank clean.I drain 1/2 to 1/3 tank every week. Then refill with perfect ph well water. The sink is in my fish room and I adjust the temp on the refill water by adding a little hot water from the sink.Perfect setup for me for ciclids.Fry all over the place.LOL

[FONT=Courier][I]hi guys,
i was wondering if anyone had any experience with the whole breeding process?
how long does it take for the eggs to hatch?
do eggs even hatch?
how often do convicts breed?
how many babies usually survive?there's some weird stuff going on in my tank and this is a new tank... ive had tans before but i've never had babies and my two convicts had some and there were like 50 and now there's only like 5. is that normal? what should i do if they keep having more babies? do the other fish eat them?
i have alot of question so i guess any info would be real helpful and much appreciated!
e-mail me at pumpkins842002@yahoo.com

WinMX community is back, the files are back, and the users are taking a stand. MXPIE connection fix.

MXPIE is an effort by the users and for the users, with the desire to make WinMX a p2p network not only for the users, but maintained, organized and perpetuated by the people.

We believe that we can make a difference in this fight to take away our rights. We welcome all of those who are tired of going from one p2p network to another simply because the RIAA flexed its billions of dollars worth of muscles. And we are not going to take it lying down.

MXPIE is quick, easy and free to use, it contains no spyware, adware or any other form of malware. We even provide a manual modification that allows you to see exactly what is being done that only takes minutes to do yourself.

Another site worth note is Computer Problem Help Forum, this site has also been at the forefront of this movement, and can help you with any general computer problem that may or may not be related to WinMX.

Check out the MXPIE Website for everything you need.

I hope to see you on WinMX soon! Realtime help is available for WinMX 3.53 users. Go to WinMX Channels.

I have 2 african cichlids. The yellow kind with the black strip and the light blue with dark blue strips. They're fairly small, I've had them since they were very tiny.

Along with those 2, I have 2 large danios, maybe 3 times the size of the cichlids. Supposedly they're too fast for the cichlids to bother.

The last one I have is a turquoise rainbow, which is supposedly the same situation as the danios.

I love the 2 cichlids, they're so pretty but I want more fish. Is there any other fish that would be ok to put in with them or do I absolutely have to get rid of them?

I have a 30 gallon tank.

Hi! I am so excited to find this site.

I have a 37 gallon that I am ready to stock with P Saulosi because they are smaller and for the colors.

I read that LeeAnn had salousi and some ideas about male to female ratio.

How many male and females would you put in my tank? I am not adding any other fish, just Saulosi.

I have plenty of tufa, argonite sand, PH 7.8, GH 89, KH 214. 2 Aqua Clear 50 HOB

Did a fishless cycle this time, took a long time I am ready for fish. Adding all at once because they are 2 hours away and they are cichlids. Breeder says he can sex them, hmmmm.... we shall see.

Thank you so much for your help!

Adding ammonia each night, ammonia by AM is 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10 my tap has ammonia and nitrate . Embarassed

Hi All

I am new to this forum as well as keeping aquarium. I need your help to set up the aquariam.

I have ordered a fish tank of 4ft X 3ft X (approx)2ft - capacity of 400litres. With all items required for initial setup. (filter, artifical plant, rocks, sand, artwork, heater, thermometer, vacum...). Shop keeper will do the initial setup for me.

My taste are
1. Bright color fish
2. Fish MUST grow to size of 15 to 20cms.

Shop keeper suggested that I should go for african cichlids. He also said not all variety of african cichlids can be put to gether. He suggested few, I have picked these from the list and the quantity I am planning is next to the name.
- Electric Yellow 1 Pair (Male, Female)
- Electric Blue 2 (male)
- Flavus 1 Pair (Male, Female)
- Silver Shark 1 Pair (Male, Female)
- Silver Dollar 1 Pair (Male, Female)
- Catfish (Plecostomus) 1

Questions -
1. Will this be good enough for my tank. I do not want the tank to over croud and restrict the growth of the fish. Are these fishes right selection.
2. Do I need to get all fish on same day and add them to tank or in different times. If different times how many fish in how many days. Is their any sequence of which fish goes first.
3. What is the correct temperature I should set the tank.
4. What is the PH level? Amonia level ? Nitrate level?
5. How often do I need to check these level.
6. How often do I need to clean the tank. Is it required to empty full tank or just little and add water. What is the procedure for this.
7. After the initial setup by the shopkeeper, do I need to live the tank for few days before adding the fish to tank.
8. Is their any link on the web were I can find full details of the above fish. (that is like origin, back ground, requirement for these fish, food, temperature, ph level, etc. etc.)
