I'm fairly new to the fish world, but here is my 20 gallon African Cichlid tank. If anyone could help me with some of the species names I would greatly appreciate it. I have 8 fish, including a feeder fish that rarely comes out.

Here is a picture on one of my breeding tanks. Our male is 3 times the size of our female, and the PVC pipes offer a great retreat. However, I have experienced with PVC retreat, the female is now residing in the retreat longer than usual. As a result, male and female courtship has decreased. I'm thinking about removing the retreat until she is holding eggs...right now I coax her out every now and than.
I found, with mouth brooders, a terracotta pot with a diameter the same length as the male is essential for fertilization. I noticed this after my F1 Oreochromis mossombica female deposits the eggs in the pot the male stands up vertically when fertilizing the eggs.

This fish is a male (we presume, he's got a couple yellow egg spots on his lower back fin. Currently he's about 2" long (maybe a bit less), he's quite aggressive, in that he holds his own amongst a tank of fully grown 4" cichlids (and other in betweens). His coloring is a bit yellowed in the picture. He's quite "gold" on his fins, almost an orange gold at the top of his top fin.index.php/fa/1451/0/

I lost 3 of them Sept/08 (Red/Jacob/Tiger) due a Canister Filtration Failer. This led me to this point and the mission was to have an all Male Controlled Over-Stocked Tank and this is why the extremes with this 75gal Tank. I will never go Salt Water because Cichlids Rule and are talked about by all visitors to this house! Let's keep Cichlid Mania Alive.

Next, I power washed the rocks and set them in water for 7 days to leach out anything harmful. "Warning", consult a professional before using chemicals if you want to "Live and/or not damage Skin"!
Added: 2 Tunze Ceramic Rock to conceal Tunze Power Heads
(Hand Painted w/natural pigments and Matted Sealant)
Added: Molded Rocks using Woodland Rubber Molds & Model Resin Kit (Attached Hand Painted Resin Rocks to Wall for depth & detail)
Note: After painting rock w/ natural pigments and attaching rock to wall w/aquarium glue, I sprayed with a Matted Sealant and let dry. After everything was dry, I set the Wall face down in my Bath Tub to start the Leaching process using some of the heavy rocks to keep the Wall submerged (very buoyant).
Added: OSI Large Smooth Bark Stump (No Soaking/Leaching or Waiting)
(In my opinion, the only "Realistic artificial Wood" out there)
Added: Mini Silk Ivy to wrap around Plumbing for concealment
(Sold @ Hobby Lobby in 6' to 9' lengths dirt cheap!)
Added: Hand Crafted Grasses & Plants
Note: Silk Ivy & Grasses came from Hobby Lobby. I used plastic sewing machine bobbins and large deep dish coat buttons for plant bases w/aquarium glue. You get 10 times the amount of plants this way and silk plants are sold by the stalk, giving you more plants than you will ever need for a fraction of the LFS Retail Prices.
Added: A few Store Bought Plants (ran out of patience)
Live Stock:

Final Note:
Started in June/07 with a 55gal Tank & 10 fish. A Red Tail Shark & 4 F Cichlids (Afra Jalo/Taiwan Tiger/Rusty/ Oto Lithobate) and 5 M Cichlids (Yellow Lab/Yellow Blaze/Pearlmutt/Red Peacock/Jacob Frybergi Otter).

Hi. Here is a pic of the dad fish to my babies I just bought. I was hoping for Kyoga Flamebacks, or Christmas Fulu's but when looking at the dad, concluded it was pundamilla nyererei. However, people are telling me it's not. Do you have any idea what this fish is? I purchased 12 fry and am not sure if breeding is a good idea...

We have been taking footage of our fish so that you can see them in motion... something distinctly lacking in regular photographs. Check them out on our Videos page, and keep checking back for new additions.

A new slideshow has been added to the front page of AfricanCichlids.net and will automatically update to include new photos as they are added, so check back often.

You can adjust the playback speed by mousing over the top of the slideshow, and can get more information on an animal by clicking on its photo.

I am hoping to revamp our gallery to weed out some of the older pictures and include the new ones very soon. Stay tuned.

I have a cichlid in my 55 gallon tank that has been in a fight recently and the result was a dislocated jaw. The fish is having a little bit of trouble eating but seems to be able to swim straight at the shrimp pellets and get one in his mouth. I am worried that he will get beaten up and/or eventually starve to death from the competition of the other fish in the tank. I have a 10 gallon hospital tank I can move him to if need be. Does anyone know how to relocate a cichlids jaw? or if there is anything else I can do?

Hi There,

I'm new and hope to find some knowledgeable cichlid keepers. Smile

Like the previous "white fuzz" poster, 2 of my fish seem to have white fuzz or spots on their body near the gills and on the top fin. Ironically, it's the two fish I bought over the weekend - the two ice blues. I'm thinking they may have been afflicted with something when I bought them.

My tank specs are in my signature. I'll see if I can take a photo of what I'm talking about.

I've been using the Jungle Labs Parasite tablets and the Melafix for torn fins (my albino was attacked by the aggressive red jewel). I've got her in a floating breeder for protection.

Since treating the water, the fish are clamping their fins and hiding out in the tank caves. Is this due to the treatment? or could it be the parasite/bacteria/illness? I've followed all the directions for the medicine. I just hope they don't pass away. I'd hate to lose one.

Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Help, this one ciclid has been developing this odd pinkish mass coming out of one side. It is several mm in length and width. the fisk acts totally fine as evidence by my inability to catch it and take to a local store. No new fish have been added in 2 months. Tank is well established and levels are good. I thought this might have been just a big bite from another fish but it appears to be growing, not healing. Is this a parasite, tumour, other??? Thanks in advance for your help. Pictures attached.

My little brother went out and bought 4 african cichlids just yesterday morning. My dad helped him put the fish in the newly cycled tank (40 gal, filter, bubbler, heater set to 78 f).

They didn't act their usual (active cichlid) self and were very shy and slow. Just a couple of hours later one fish began to swim vertically. We're not sure why?

I'm new to fish and I just want to help my young brother out.

i am new to the african cichlid community and have enjoyed my experience thus far. i have had the tank for a month and a half and have for the last week or so been battling what i was told by a pet store as ick. i have a 29 gallon tank with currently 5 (had eight) small to mid size africans of diff variety. in the last three days i have lost three. the fish have been purchased from different stores at different times and have all seemed to get along well and be very active. the last fish was purchased from a pet smart and shortly after introducing him to the tank things began to go bad. he started with the sugar like spots. i then noticed the other fish scratching against the rocks and swimming in jerky motions. i added the ap pro quick cure medicine as directed for 5 days and it seemed not to be working. then i noticed a diff fish with a popeye and was told to change 1/4 water and treat the tank with marcyn. the next day two fish were dead. now my yellow lab has some fuzz growing on his eye and sides. my question is, does this sound like just ick or something more serious. is there hope for the fish and tank. if not what should i do different in the future?
