being new to cichlids i would like other peoples view on my setup. i have a rena 200 tank, rena xp4 filter, eheim pro 3 filter, vecton 25watt uv filter,tetratec400 air pump & 2 pdh powerheads. is this a suitable setup for the keeping of Mbuna cichlids? any ideas on the improvement would be great fully accepted.

I have one cobalt blue and one very large frontosa. I just some kind of peacock last week and they already killed it. I have decided not to buy anymore peacocks unless they are a lot bigger. I think i should strictly only have mbunas & and zebras. i was thinking about buying...
2 Auratus (1 male, 1 female)
1 Electric Blue Ahli (1 male)
2 Electric Yellow Lab (2 males)
2 Kenyi (1 male, 1 female)
2 Red Zebra (2 males)
2 Demasoni (1 male, 1 female)
I know there are other fish out there that are compatible with the fish listed above, but i do not know the names of them and where to buy them. Could someone tell me some cool fish that are compatible with the fish above. thanks

Hi guys,
Our cichlids are thriving and breeding liek rabbits. As a result its costing us a small fortune to feed them the good frozen food.
So does anyone have a good home made recipie for Malawi Chichlids, it needs to be middle of the road - i.e suit both carnivores and herbivores.
I found a recipie a while back that used shrimp, beef heart, spirula, and peas but haven't been able to find it again.
cheers

I came across this and wanted to share with you just incase some of you have never seen the natural habitat of our favorite fish. If you look carefully you may see your own fish there swimming between the rocks. What I want you to notice is the size of rock and shapes, the large tall ones and the low smaller rocks. Notice there aren't many plants, actually I didn't see any. There are pics of the islands where some of our fish come from. Did you know that Malawi Lake is the 9th largest lake in the world and habitats the largest selection of fish compared to Europe and North America together.
I got to thinking about my tank and know that I have three different types of cichilds in it. The Mbuna of course (my favs), the peacocks, and the Haps. The peacocks and Haps habitat is pretty much the same. Sandy and plants. The Mbunas of course with all the rocks. As I sit here and look at my tank I can say with exception to the sand, I did a pretty good job at accomidating them. I have a good supply of river rock in my tank and plants for the others. I try to keep the river rock to the back of the tank with a few little one spiratic in the front. As tall as I want to build the wall to duplicate their habitat, I know my tank will never support all that weight so I try to do the best I can with the lighter smaller rocks. Thats why I want the fake rock background. I found one on the internet that is mirrored after Malawi Lake's rock walls. A young man made it himself and wish I had the pic to show you. I still haven't found out how he made it or with what. Anyhooch I fall in love more and more everyday with the Malawi cichilds and their habitat. Here is the website, have fun...
I want to give kudos to Lee Miller, the one that took the pictures. They did a great job.

I'm not saying this is always the case but often these fish are either returns that the retailer either doesn't have much information about and/or a supplier talked the retailed into trying a few see if you can shift them or worse aren't pure fish but are actually the result of inter breeding. Please act with caution whenever you buy fish do your research first but espeically with tanks marked up as "mixed malawi" "mixed cichlids" "mixed mbuna" you wont regret it.
You can never have enough tanks.

Gday everyone....Well I have been bitten by the bug of keeping African Cichlids....from the Lake Malawi region
I have spent some time going through this forum and others and know doubt the question I have to ask has been asked a million times ...however here we go
I have a 36" tank, 18" high and 14" wide Holds approx 29 Gallons
I have used a 6mm gravel for the base, with some real and artifical plants...I have also added many rock caves and crevices to the tank, I am using a Fluval 3 Filter
The Cichlids I like are as follows
The Electric Yellow
The Electric Blue
The Peacock
and as a bottom feed the bristle nose Cat fish
My question is Qty
What would you advise and how many of each diffent sex from each type would you also recommend..
Also what other fish would you recomend that would go nicely in this tank with the combination above, taking in consideration the size of the tank
Thanks in advance
Kevin

Oh man! heres a little story for everyone and I am looking for new fish advice!
Yesterday, after i had moved my tree frog out of my favorite tank, a 46 gal. bowfront, i starting to clean it out and ready it for the cichlids. filled it with gravel, brought all old tank water from 30 into the 46, put close to 200 pounds of rockwork, finished off the water, adding filter/heaters. then just after i realsed my 3/4 inch zebras and family into their huge new home,i went to put the glass top on. it wouldnt fit. i was soooo perplexed, i tried jamming it in there, i tried re-adjusting it, bla bla bla. nothing. then my boyfriend came in the room and he said, "is it suppost to bow out more on the top like that?" then i started to freak out! the plastic piece that had run from the bow to the back of the tank at the top had broken in the middle. (this happened years ago with the treefrog in it, and had not been full of water since). then I realized that my tank was about to burst! the seems were looking thinner by the moment! so i was like crap!!! get a bucket! we bucked water out and my fish are freakn out. finally the water level had receeded enough for the top to fit right and the bowwing apartly stopped. crisis overted, except all my fish now had to be moved again. and the only tank still up was a 10 gallon. so in they go. haha. add some of their "new old" water throw in as many small rock pieces as i can to make territories and presto, 10 angry fish.
Now i had bought the bowefron tank at petsmart 5 years prior. since then the light on top had broken, the switch feel into the light and had to be unpluged manunally, so im thinking this tank is broken. i call them and tell them what happened and they decied that out of a courtisy they will replace the whole set up for me. WOW. it wasnt even a warrantied tank and i had no reciept! but this is great becuase i have NOOOO money and those poor fish would be in the 10 gallon until i could figure some way to move my tree frog into something else to free up the 30 again.
i am going to pick up the tank today, ahha HOPEFULLY everything will go smooth this time. boy was that a scary night. (i figured my apartment owner wouldnt like 50 gallons on my floor?)
So heres the question!
so the new new 46 bowfront tank will only have 10 fish in it, 4 zebras, 1 blue cobalt zebra?, 3 albino zebras, and 2 kenjis. all are under an inch. i am going to get a bottom feeder(s), dont know what kind yet(waiting on topic in catfish and loaches forumn), but what other fish can I put in there? or is 10 a good number. seems to me the last time i had fish in this tank, i had close to 20, and things went very well. (same kinds fo fish too).
although i would like some varriety, im not sure whats really safe to add.
What do you guys think??

Just thought that this might be useful information. When I first started my tank, I used sand instead of gravel. It looked great, but it was tough to clean. When I did water changes, the siphon would really stir the sand up and the water would be really cloudy for about 24 hours, and would be completely clear within 72 hours. Plus, fish waste was really visible on the surface of the sand about a week after the water change. If you have gravel in your tank, the solid waste particles kind of settle between the gravel and blend in, but with sand being so fine, the poop just kind of lays there on top. I did not like that, so I wanted to switch to a natural looking gravel. I purchased gravel, washed it and put it in the tank. I removed most of the sand with a plastic cup, but left a little bit in there, not because I wanted to, but because I could not get it all out. I put the gravel in a hand full at time, and gently spread it around over the sand. Now I have sand and gravel. Only the gravel is visible, but if you look at the side of the tank you can see the sand underneath. I have some live plants in my tank, and they seem to take root well in the sand. Also, when my cichlids dig, it looks really cool because they clear all of the gravel away from the surface and dig a little pit in the sand. I think this gives the tank a more natural feel to it too. I do 30% water changes every two weeks, and I don't have any problems with the remaining sand clouding up the water.

Hello, I'm not a beginner but I've never had cichlids before.
I have a 100 liter fishtank decorated with volcanic rock (I made some hiding places with them)and plants and would like to have (among other fish) a Labidocromis caeruleus(yellow) and a Metriaclima callainos(blue). I can't find the information I need on websites or books for the Metriaclima callainos(blue)(I'm a bit lame with websites...)
Questions are : Would those two get along ok?
Do you have any idea on their prices?
What other fish would you suggest for my tank?
Thank you for your time!

We have had Malawi mbunda - pseudotrophus ACEI and yellow labs for two years. We have 3 tanks - 55 gallon - 30 gallon and 10 gallon. Today we took several fish to the local fish store, of course they "gave" us more fish. The problem is they gave us 4 livingstonii. After much research, I don't know that this is a good match. What do you think?

Hey Guys, I just picked up four Mbuna and I can't figure out what they are. Maybe you can help? They look almost like yellow labs except they have a reddish tint to the dorsal fins. I've attached a picture so that you can see the largest of the four, he's only about an inch long.

I just picked up four of what the LFS had listed as "yellow Kenyi". Here is a pic of one of the fish. The biggest of the four is about an inch long, it is the one in the pic. All of the literature I can find says that the kenyis start of with the blue color of the females and then the males change to yellow at maturity. If so, can you help me identify this fish as an actual Kenyi or is it some other mystery species?

I just bought four of what the LFS calls "Yellow Kenyi". However all the literature I can find says that they should be blue with black bars until maturity. All four of the ones that I bought are yellow now and the biggest one I have is about an inch long. Here is a Pic of the biggest one, can you help me verify whether or not this is actually a Kenyi or is some mystery species?

I recently picked up three P. feullaborni. two of them are OB variant. I've noticed that both of the OBs have developed what looks to me like a bad case of black ick, if there is such a thing. Here is a picture if that helps the diagnosis. What does the board think? If so, how do I treat?

I've had a 90 gallon african tank running for about 6 months now. I have about 20 africans, probably around 50" worth of fish. My question is how much fish will i need so that agression will become unfocused, and my fish will color up? My dominant fish is a 5" wild caught Ps. Zebra Yellow Chin/Chest(?). I am not worried about him killing anything, i have enough fish to prevent that (my smallest fish is a barely 1" baby Blue Dolphin, and he is doing fine). My problem is rarely does anything color up except for the zebra, and now that both his females are pregnant, and he KNOWS he dominates the tank, he's even losing color. I've tried introducing fish of equivalent size and agression (a Ps. Zebra flagtop, also wildcaught, and an F1 VC-10), but they simply colored up, attempted a fight, and lost. Any ideas on types of fish? Amount of fish? I know how many i can have at maximum, but my funds aren't quite sufficient enough to purchase a tank load of fish at a time. I want color!
