i got this guy in an assorted tank. it was the healthiest looking one in the tank, and the colors just made it a must, extremely dark blue (almost black) with a white topped dorsal fin. but i got no idea as to what he is..

Hi,
I have just bought 3 Pseudotropheus Crabro yesterday morning and have successfully introduced them all to my tank. One of them is definately a male as he has a blue top fin, is the largest and is guarding his teritory extremely aggressively.
I was wondering whether this is an indication of his adulthood and wanting to spawn or is just general aggression. He is only 5cm, so I am not sure what to think.
By the way, I am currently saving up to purchase a further 12 of these little guys. I think I will have more success if I keep this as a species-only tank, is this a good idea?
Thanyou for your time.

Hi,
I have just done, what I think, was a stupid thing to do....I bought 3, yes 3, Pseudotropheus Crabro. They are around 5cm and below but there are no other cichlids in the entire aquarium. Will these little fellas beat each other up? Should I get another 5 or so as soon as possible? The reason I thought it was stupid is because one of them is definately the ex- alpha male of his tank and still is at the present in my tank.
I know this because of his blue dorsal fin and extremely aggressive behaviour towards his reflection(flared gills) and his other two tank-mates. I'm also pretty sure that one of the others is a male also, as he has the slightest tinge of blue to him.
What should I do about the stocking?
Should I prepare for breeding? There just so small though!?

Hi,
I was wondering what all of you thought about my up-coming stocklist of my 300L Aquarium.Well, here it is:
-8x Metriaclima/ Maylandia/ Pseudotropheus Lombardoi (Kenyi)
-8x Pseudotropheus Crabro (Bumblebee)
Will these two species be alright together? I know they are both extremely aggressive, moreso the Bumblebees but I have been reading up and think they should be alright together.
I also heard that the Bumblebees are extraordinarily difficult to breed, is this true? I'm not quite sure whether it is or not as no apparent reason was given.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing some replies!
If these species won't go well then what could?Ideas are welcome!

Hi,
I was wondering what all of you thought of my new set-up which is intended for a large group of 15 mbunas.
Sorry that I don't have any pictures, as I know that this helps a lot but here is the information about the general tank and set-up:
-300L/75G Acrilic 4 ft. aquarium, dimensions: 120cmx60cmx70cm
-Not sure of the sort of filter as it came with the tank(very expensive) however, black tube sucks tank water up into the hood of the tank where the filter is contained. The water is filtered through 6 sponges on top of hundreds of 'Fluval' bearings for extra good bacterial growth. Then enters the tank by the other side with a strong flow.
-Two 150 watt heaters setting the temperature at 27 degrees C, I would prefer it lower as I am working on it. My goal is to get to 25 degrees C.
-Two large piles of rock creating at least 20 decent sized caves
-Black gravel with crushed shells strewn all through it.
-There are also two huge wood structures(not real, so they won't affect the Ph) that create a further four caves.
I hope I am not missing anything from the set up, if anything else would help please let me know!
I do water changes once every three weeks, in which I clean all the rocks, siphon the gravle thoroughly and clean all algae off the glass. I change 50% during this.
When I am re-filling I add water conditioner (that kills all chloramines, chlorine and heavy metals, also slime-coats the fish) Algaefix, Malawi Lake Conditioning Salts, Ph Buffer, Bio-Booster and also a precautionary Stress and disease coat to prevent future problems with the fish.
I let everything dissolve before adding it to the tank and make sure the temperature is exact to that of the tank.
After the tank is filled I check and monitor Ph at 8.2, Ammonia at 0, Nitrite at 0 and Nitrates at 5 to a maximum of 10.
Does all of this sound about right?
Oh, and if anyone was interested in what I am going to be putting in the tank here is a list:
-8 Metriaclima/Pseudotropheus/Maylandia Lombardoi(whichever name you prefer!)
-8 Pseudotropheus Crabro
-3 Bushynose Plecostomus
Thankyou for taking the time to read this huge article I didn't want to miss anything out for you,
Thanks for the info.!
By the way the tank has been fully cycled for almost a year now and currently has an angelfish, Daniel and another bushynose Plecostomus, Oscar living happily inside!

Hi,
I have been looking and looking for what the name of these 3 are so I can brush up on their care, but can't find any pictures that look like them.. im pretty sure the orange one is a red zebra, but the other 2 i just don't know, they look like they could be the exact same type as the red zebra but the coloring is different, they both have the same tall sail type dorsal fin and eye spots on the lower fin and the log pointed pectoral fins... the 2 unknown ones do have the same head shape as each other but a tad different from the red zebra. The both have stripes, the yellow ones are easier to see than the blue one and the yellow ones seem to get darker when he is flaring and picking on the blue one. I have attached a few pictures of each of them. If anyone knows what they are, I would love to know.
Thanks!!!

i have a 30 gallon mbuna tank with 1 acei, 1 yellow lab, 1 joahanni, 1 snow white, 1 bumble bee. i recently added a red jewel cichlid to my tank. within days of adding him my acei and yellow lab were found beat to death on the bottom of the tank. could it possibably be my jewel cichlid that killed them because i had no aggression problems before i added the jewel cichlid.

I bought recently a pair of cichilids but unfortunately the guy from the store could not tell me exactly what species they were. He could not decide if they were Maylandia "Membe Deep" or Maylandia estherae (the female being the orange fish and the male the one with blue hue). My questions are: Are they really a pair and what do you think about species?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello,

I am new to fish keeping and I am trying my luck with some African Cichlids.

I think one is an electric yellow
and the other 2 are Red Zebras.
I am still trying to get though the cycling phase in my fish tank.
Lately i have no ammonia but high nitrite readings which brings me to my first Q.
During the high nitrite phase of the cycling how can I keep the nitrite at a manageable level?
I have been doing water changes (about 25% for 2 days now) and the nitrite level is dropping very little and its very high.
I have same aqueon ammonia treatment that also says it neutralizes Nitrite as well so I have been using that to keep the fish hanging in there but I don't want to do anything that will slow down the cycling process or lose the fish.

My second issue is I'm a little bit worried about one of my fish.
I'm pretty sure its a male Red Zebra (its a blueish color with some very faint stripes down its sides).
He has been a lot less active today and keep hiding behind the tank filter.
He does not appear to be gasping for air and is not tilting around or upside down. The other 2 fish are fine.
He is just not being near as active as normal and he did not eat this evening when I fed the fish.
He has been the most aggressive fish so for him to hide and stuff is a little strange.

I have browsed around to find some info on these things but have had no luck which means im just terrible at using Google or O don't know how to word it right!

Anyways thanks for any answer is receive!

hi i was wondering if i can put acei's with peacocks. are their water quality preferences and diet to different from each others? im planning on putting them into a 90 gallon. i would get 6 or 7 juvies and pick out a good sex ratio for each species. would this be ok or would the acei's be to aggressive and nip the fins of the peacocks? also if it is ok how many adults of the two species would do fine in a 90 gallon. thanks for your advice =).

Hello all I was wondering and have looked through all 11 pages and couldn't find any info.....

I have a 210g tank and I wanting to stock it with the following breeding pairs...

  • Aulonocara baenschi (Sunshine peacock)
  • Protomelas taeniolatus (Super red Emp)
  • Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania"
  • Protomelas spilonotus (Mara Rocks)

I couldn't find much info on and was looking for someone with Hap experience to help me out. I have read that peacocks cross breed like crazy due to the very similar females hence only wanting one pair but I cant find much if any info about haps cross breeding then again the females look different. So do Haps not have the massive cross breeding problems that peacocks do?

Hello, I'm new to this board and have to start off with a stocking help question.

I have 1 6' 125 gallon mixed Malawi tank. Currently it's stocked with 5 yellow labs(juvies), 1 acei(juvie), 1 red zebra (male 6"), 4 venustus (unsexed juvies), 2 sunshine peacocks(1 male 1 female), plus 7 syno multis, and a red bruno pleco.

I'm planning on going back to the LFS tomorrow after they get their new stock in and getting 4 more Acei to make 5, a couple female red zebras and I wanted to get another species of Hap or Peacock to add a few more larger fish to the tank.

Any recommendations?

125 Gallon Malawi
4 venustus, 2 fryeri, 5 Yellow Labs, 1 Red Zebra, 5 Acei, 7 synodontis multipunctatus, violet-red bruno pleco

Hi,
I live in Lyman in Southern Maine and I am a fishaholic!
I am hoping to find others in my area to buy and swap fish and fry with. I have a 150 cichlid tank with mostly africans in it. I have a 100 gal with Angel fish. A 55 gal with Discus.
Many 55 gal and 29 gal breeder tanks set up.
I am looking for some colorful cichlids for my 150. A month ago my bedroom was being painted and the cord to the cichlid tank got unplugged. The tank was covered with a drop cloth and the next day when I went to feed them over three quarters of them were dead. I was heartbroken. ! I am now trying to replace them without going broke. I am on a fixed income so can't afford the rare ones. Also would like to find someone who raises Discus to swap and buy from. Looking for Koi veil angels,All Black and pearl-scale angelfish. Drop me a line and let me know what you have. I am also hoping to find a 4ft tank over 120 gal with or without stand. Emperor filter, magnum 350, canister filter, 4' light , 6' light..
email me mizscarlett@roadrunner.com or call 207 499 7340
Have a beautiful 5 inch texas cichlid for sale or swap.

I would like to purchase one of these today. A male to be exact. I don't know a lot about them except for what I have read on the internet. I know that they should be fed more veggie matter then protein matter, I know they are somewhat dwarfs, and I know they are moderatly aggressive. I will only be purchasing one and that's only if someone can tell that it is ok to put it in my tank that is loaded with Mbuna but it also contains one Psuedotropheus Demosoni. I had just recently purchased that fish with strict instructions not to have more then one unless it was a large pack (12 or more) because of aggression issues. Because of size of fish, aggression level, and most coloring, these fish look pretty similar to me and that's why the caution. Please respond only if you have had experience with these two fish together.

Thanks

I have one cobalt blue and one very large frontosa. I just some kind of peacock last week and they already killed it. I have decided not to buy anymore peacocks unless they are a lot bigger. I think i should strictly only have mbunas & and zebras. i was thinking about buying...

2 Auratus (1 male, 1 female)
1 Electric Blue Ahli (1 male)
2 Electric Yellow Lab (2 males)
2 Kenyi (1 male, 1 female)
2 Red Zebra (2 males)
2 Demasoni (1 male, 1 female)

I know there are other fish out there that are compatible with the fish listed above, but i do not know the names of them and where to buy them. Could someone tell me some cool fish that are compatible with the fish above. thanks

Hi guys,

Our cichlids are thriving and breeding liek rabbits. As a result its costing us a small fortune to feed them the good frozen food.

So does anyone have a good home made recipie for Malawi Chichlids, it needs to be middle of the road - i.e suit both carnivores and herbivores.

I found a recipie a while back that used shrimp, beef heart, spirula, and peas but haven't been able to find it again.

cheers

I came across this and wanted to share with you just incase some of you have never seen the natural habitat of our favorite fish. If you look carefully you may see your own fish there swimming between the rocks. What I want you to notice is the size of rock and shapes, the large tall ones and the low smaller rocks. Notice there aren't many plants, actually I didn't see any. There are pics of the islands where some of our fish come from. Did you know that Malawi Lake is the 9th largest lake in the world and habitats the largest selection of fish compared to Europe and North America together.

I got to thinking about my tank and know that I have three different types of cichilds in it. The Mbuna of course (my favs), the peacocks, and the Haps. The peacocks and Haps habitat is pretty much the same. Sandy and plants. The Mbunas of course with all the rocks. As I sit here and look at my tank I can say with exception to the sand, I did a pretty good job at accomidating them. I have a good supply of river rock in my tank and plants for the others. I try to keep the river rock to the back of the tank with a few little one spiratic in the front. As tall as I want to build the wall to duplicate their habitat, I know my tank will never support all that weight so I try to do the best I can with the lighter smaller rocks. Thats why I want the fake rock background. I found one on the internet that is mirrored after Malawi Lake's rock walls. A young man made it himself and wish I had the pic to show you. I still haven't found out how he made it or with what. Anyhooch I fall in love more and more everyday with the Malawi cichilds and their habitat. Here is the website, have fun...
I want to give kudos to Lee Miller, the one that took the pictures. They did a great job.

I'm not saying this is always the case but often these fish are either returns that the retailer either doesn't have much information about and/or a supplier talked the retailed into trying a few see if you can shift them or worse aren't pure fish but are actually the result of inter breeding. Please act with caution whenever you buy fish do your research first but espeically with tanks marked up as "mixed malawi" "mixed cichlids" "mixed mbuna" you wont regret it.

You can never have enough tanks.
