Hi all,
I'm new here. I've been keeping fish for about 3 years now. Right now I have an oscar, red devil, and jack dempsey in my 125 gallon tank. Soon I'm going to be building a 400gal tank and I want to convert the 125 to a african setup. I'm thinking of a tank of all firemouths mostly because they're pretty easy to find around here and I like the way they look. How many could fit in a 125g? Is it a bad idea to do all firemouths? WOuld i be better off with a different species, or even a mixed tank? I'm completely new with africans and I'm trying to find out as much as possible before I go ahead with it.

Firemouths are not African. They are Central American, more specifically, Mexico. Is that what you really wanted?

For African fish, just look through our gallery of fish. They will all be AFrican cichlids.

In a 125 you can pack it up nicly depending on what type of Africna Cichlid you wanna keep. If you go with all Mbunas set up your looking at maybe 30-40 fish probably depending on the Mbuna you get because there are many Dwarf species hence forth can hold alot more! Peacocks/haps are alot bigger so you can't hold as many I'd say maybe 20 large peacocks/ haps as they enjoy lots of swimming space.

General Ratio: 1-2 inch of fish per 1 gallon(s) of water, but thats arguable with African cichlids as they do very well crouded because it reduces species to species aggression theres much debat about that, and can go in great detail, so if yuo wanna know more ask about it, and i'd love to help ya out.

good luck on yuor set up what ever you decide on

I agree. You will probably fit lots more in.
Firemouths can be hard to keep together as larger ones will bully any smaller firemouths in the tank but in a tank that size you might be lucky.

I would go for a Tropheus colony. You could get 30 in there no problem and in no time you will have a breeding colony.
They won`t eat their young but you won`t be able to add any more Tropheus of the same species once they have established a breeding colony.
You could even get two different colonies once they are not too alike.
