I believe Oscars are S. American and you can't mix them in the same tank with African cichlids. Not to mention Oscars need a huge tank as they get extremely big. One oscar can get as large as 12-14 inches long. You need to see a full grown to appreciate their size. One Oscar requires a 75 gal tank. They dig like crazy and make a huge mess in the tank. IMHO most people that get oscars end up getting rid of them because of their size and the mess they make. I had a Central and South American tank in the beginning. I had two oscars and two Jack Dempseys. Wow they were only small yet and had to get rid of them due to the sizes they were reaching and I just did not want to deal with a 200 gal tank at that time. Acutally I may have needed bigger than 200 gal after it was all said and done as Jack Dempsey's get very large too.

Now if you decide to put them in a tank with African cichlids and divide the tank, you will drive your Africans literally crazy. The Africans absolulty hate the oscar amongst other fish and will continually try to get at them through the divider. I strongly advise you not to do this. One thing I know for a fact is that African cichlids DO NOT care how big these oscars get. They are not intimidated by their size.

No not true, Oscars get huge, not only do they get long but also very round and thick. LPS want you to buy as many as possible. Have you ever walked into a mom and pop shop and seen a full size oscar in a 39 gal tank? I haven't. I have seen full size oscars in 200, 300, and etc etc. You can put two in a 75 gal but trust me, they will not be happy and thrive. If they are babies you can put 20 in a 75 gal tank. But they do grow up.

If you ever want to see a fully grown Oscar in the most beautiful tank set up for large predatory fish just go to www.monsterfishrescue.com and you should see some pictures. The owner had at one time I do believe 9 to 11 of them and the behavior of them changed to a working group / shoal. He's had I think a couple that reached 11". That is the largest I have heard of them getting. This is actual putting a tape measure on them. They normally are not kept in such large tanks. One per 100 gallons when they reach adult hood. The growth of Oscars as well as appetite is fast and large. If you do put them in small tanks and don't give them room the growth can be stunted. Example if you poke around the site above a red tailed cat was kept in a very small aquarium and showed up unhealthy upon rescue. He spent about 4 months of rehab with that cat fish and it is normal now.

AS the moderator stated "DO the research". Okay here is what M.F.R.'s moto is: Do the research, build/buy the tank and then purchase your fish. Many times it's you have the tank, buy the fish and later go.... "Well that didn't work or I didn't know...?" Then the fish is in a situation that's unhealthy.

MFR is eventually going to lobby for having certain fish not allowed in the hobby. Red Tailed Cat fish being sold at Petsmart or even Walmart is just NOT right. Tiger Shovel Nose catfish a fish that gets 30+" is just NOT a cool thing to have in any pet stores. Less then half of a percent of the people in our hobby could handle large predatory fish.
