I don't know much about this paticular fish but the general info on all cichlids is, once they reach maturity, they usually change in one way or another, can be sutle or very distinguished. If you google the fish you should be able to find the answer to your question for that paticular fish. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I looks like a hybrid Gold Head Compressiceps.
The broken bands sometimes are an indication of bybridisation.

I'm getting to view this thread a little late, but I would definitely say that this isn't a hybrid.

Most Alto. compressiceps, and A. calvus have bars that are broken vertically. As far as not continuing to the bottom of the fish, this is just from the mood.

It is definitely A. compressiceps, but since there are tons and tons of geographical variations, it's hard to say which one. Maybe "Mwela", but who knows with out talking to the breeder/importer.

Your fish might get darker when it is feeling more comfortable in the tank, and judging by the date of your original post, I will guess that it already has. The mood of the fish will ultimately determine what he or she is going to look like at any given time. In you picture the colors are subdued, which is common with being stressed out.

That is in incorrect statement IMO.

I think my wording may have been a little vague. By saying bars that are broken vertically, I simply mean that most Altolamprologus have V shaped bars. Giving them the appearance of vertically broken bars. The bars will usually join at the ventral area of the fish. In the pictured fish in this thread, it is showing incomplete barring due to its mood. If the fish were showing it's non stressed colors, then the bars would likely be complete, and broken vertically but meeting at the bottom.

Here are some examples of this...

A. Calvus

A. compressiceps

A. compressiceps

Also, check out www.cichlidpress.com and look under Altolamprologus calvus and compressiceps. Many of these pictures are of these guys in the wild, and they are showing the same markings.

Sorry if I created any confusion.
