I just want to see what everyone thinks, a wet dry filter or a canister like a XP3 or Eheim 2229, what is everyone's feeling has to the better filtration device.
Plus and minus of both I guess

I personally have never had a sump and probably would know more about them if I had decided to do a reef or marine tank, however I use canister filters and HOB filters and find the canister filters do such a wonderful job and there is less maintenance. If there is an illness in the tank, you just have to take out the charcoal and there is still other filter media in the canister filter that aids in keeping the water clean. I can not say the same for HOB filters. HOB filters will just cycle the water but will not clean it if you have to remove the charcoal to treat the tank with medication. Sorry I can't give you an opinion on sumps.

Well decided to take the Reef approach and go with a sump, there are just too many benefits of a sump that a canisiter cannot provide. for example larger water volume, hiding all the heaters , better biologic filter and mechanical is much easier to change out in seconds, quick and easy water changes all from the sump.

off to upgrade to the 90 with sump

Hello,

I know many don't know about wet/dry's, sumps and refugiums.
I seriously like them hand down for the benefits that they provide. The bad thing about them is that they take an incredible amount of understanding. Until you understand them you'll think they are complicated, but in reality they are the simplist filters on the market in my personal experience.
Many can talk to you until your blue in the face and you'd still not know how they operate.

I found out how they operate by a friend of mine in Ohio. He and I wrote emails back and forth about fish topics. He and I milled about and one day he told me the scoop on wet/ dry filters in how they work. The fear is the power outages and fear they will drain you aquarium.

I like wet/ dry filters so much I am now selling them on my web site. For a pretty though understanding you could read the article below.

I have a marineland tidepool sump hooked to my 55. I love having a sump. they are so much easier to maintain with much better filtration than any canister or hob filter I have ever had
