I was transferring fish from one tank to another a few days ago and my male Kenyi (Kenny)jumped out of the net and landed on the floor. I desperately got him back in the the water as fast as possible. I did use my hands to pick him up. I would say he fell over three feet, maybe four. I have to say ever since getting him back into the water something has been terribly wrong with him. He is no longer the dominant fish of the tank, he has black bars now and his face, lip area is very black and eyes look much more black then ever before. He hides up in the corners of the tank or down in the corners resting on the gravel. It seems to me he is not thriving. He is my oldest and most cherrished fish. He has the most character of all the fish.
Well he did anyways.
I would say this incident happend nearly 5-6 days ago. It could be coincidental that he is acting like this from the fall and maybe something else is causing the problem. His bars have shown up before but only for minutes under stress. Never this long. He is about 3 years old. I have raised him since he was 1.5 inches long and now he is full grown. I do believe he is kind of small for a full grown kenyii as he is only 4-5 inches long, as my other kenyi are over 5 inches and they are females. I have done all the normal stuff, checked the water, look for disease. I will tell you, even my peacocks are bullying him.
Do you think this could be a case of just rearranging the tank? I mean I have rearranged the tank so many times and he has always taken claim as the head honcho no matter what. Not this time though. Any adivse would be helpful. Would hate to lose this one because of something stupid I over looked. Is it possible for a fish to get brain damage? That is really what it looks like. I believe he is eatting but will really pay attention today to how much. If he is being aggressive about it.

I, unfortunately, can;t be a much help. If the fish fell to the floor it is very possible that the fish received some damage. When put back in the tank, even if long term he would be ok, the other fish can smell weakness and will do what they can to keep him from gaining his threshold over them.
At a show here a couple years back, a friend of mine won best in show with an Aunloocara bannschi. It was a beautiful fish. After the awards ceremony he was bagging his show fish up. Whn he put his net in to get the banschi, the thing jumped out of the show tank and hit the floor with a flop. Dead fish.
It was kind of sad, it was a beautiful fish, but the look on his face made it almost worth it  I guess I have a bit of a sadistic fish streak!

ahhh that's too bad about the show fish. Thanks for answering though. I thought that may be the issue. It makes me sad because he was so full of life before and now he is like a gold fish. Just surviving. Isn't that why we collect these fish? because they are so full of character, ever so much more than other fish? I will miss the old Kenny. Believe it or not, I am quite sad over it. Maybe over time he will regain some strength, maybe not.
