I have been treating my oscar for the past month now, with the help of a friend from the pet store with no luck. She has what appears to be tumors in her mouth and they are blocking any food from getting in her mouth. I have tried several treatments with advise, Erythomyocin, Melafix and this blue medicine the store uses that is not available to public because of its potency, its suppose to cure all.

I've had the water tested 3 times, made 3, 50% water changes between each treatment and have removed everything, including gravel from tank.Since first treatment began water turned cloudy and has remained that way. Other two fish seem to be ok. This morning oscar has appeared to lose most of all her orange color and appears to look grayish. Her fins are also thinning and beginning to tear.

I am very attached to her, she is 7 1/2 years old and has such a great personality. I actually can play with her. If anyone has any advise, I am at my wits end, I would greatly appreciate it and thank you in advance.

Hi D.

I got your email and I will tell you what I know.

First off, your fish is losing it's color, probably due to the fact that A. it's not getting the sufficient amount of oxygen. And B. It's not getting sufficient enough nutrition.

The fish is over 7 years old and feel that it's a pretty good long life. Most of these fish only live between 5 and 10 years.

I understand that you are very close to the fish but I believe that with everything you have tried, it's probably got a benign (spelling stinks) tumor. When a fish starts to lose nutrition and oxygen, you will notice a lot of sudden changes in their physical appearence. Their fins will start to fray, they will change a dull color, they may look smaller in width, they can all the sudden pop up with all kinds of disease.

There is only one suggestion that I would tell you to try but I honestly don't think it will do you any good. But we who are close to our fish like to try everything possible before we resort to putting our loved ones down.

Take the fish out of the tank and put it in a small hospital tank. NO lights, temp around 81 degrees. Put a bubbler in there. No food. No charcoal. Get some sulfa from any LPS. Use it according to the directions and size of the tank. If it is just an infection, it will clear up. But you have already used an antibiotic which by the way, antibiotics kill your bioshpere in your tank and that's probably why you have noticed some cloudiness. Your tank is recycling. Colonies of bacteria are starting to form again. Sulfa will not kill your bioshpere. As well as using the sulfa, put 1 Tablespoon of salt for every 5 gals of water. There should be no gravel or anything in this tank. Just bare. You will want a small filter to circulate water. You can use a small powerhead if you would like. Do a treatment. After 3-4 days do a 25 percent water change or when ever the direction call for it on the sulfa. If it does not work and the fish is still alive. Try a second treatment with fresh water, salt etc.

I am sorry but this is all that can be done for this little one. If you want to put the fish down, there is a perfectly humane way of doing so. Go to your local nutrionalist store, where they sell vitamins and minerals. Get yourself some 'Oil of Clove' liquid. Should come in a little small bottle. Put about 2 Cups of water in a container and add 8-10 drops of this clove oil. It will calmly put your fish to sleep until it dies. Please do not flush the fish. It's very inhumane as well as freezing it or using baking soda to suck all the oxygen out of the water.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Let me recant that the Tiger Oscar's life span is 10 years or better. Sorry we don't usually handle advise on South American cichlids here.

It still doesn't change anything though on the treatment that I suggested.
