I finally bought some new fish for my tank and one new fish seems to have some sort of injury. The fish seems that it can't open any fins on the bottom of his body.

He can swim to the top and the bottom of the tank with no problem, or at least from what I can see. But his arm fins, i guess that is best name for them, move like crazy. He spends most of his time at the very top of the tank, or hidding in some rocks. When I feed the fish he eats with no probelm, and the other fish leave him alone. I have a total of 6 fish in a 100 gallon tank, which may be he is left alone.

Do you think the fish is deformed, inured, or needs some time to adapt to the new tank. If I bring him back to the store they probally will give me a refund or new fish. But if he can live in the tank with no problems I will keep him.

Thanks,

It's hard to say. My own personal opinion is to return it. It sounds like something is wrong with it. Can't be for sure though if it is illness or birth defect. Most times hatcheries or breeders will kull the birth defect fish out. I'm not sure if I am spelling kull right but it means they take out the ones that have issues. Every once in awhile one slips by though. I recently had a batch of yellow labs, 3 of which were born with birth defects, two with a lower jaw much bigger than the top part of it's mouth and one with only one eye. The other eye hole seems to be too small for the eye. These fish are so small and grow so slow that I really didn't notice the defects until they were a couple weeks old. I can't in good contious just get rid of a fish because of a birth defect, like my dog with valley fever, or my cat that can't learn to use a litter pan, or my kids that have destroyed my house more times than Heinz has pickles. I know they are just fish and my daughter has offered to put them down but they are not suffering, they eat just fine and swim just fine so I am not worried about it. I will just keep them until their days are done.

Because we don't know what is wrong with the fish you have, and you just got it and maybe you haven't grown an attachement yet, I would consider taking it back ASAP.
