It does your fish no good to be dishonest about your tank! [message #10008] |

When your fish are in trouble and you need help diagnosing them of illness, it doesn't do them any good to be dishonest about how long your tank has been up and running or if you are doing quality water changes. People write me all the time asking me to help them diagnose their sick fish and I have found that a percentage of them don't have any idea that their tank's should be cycled and a lot of times their fish are sick because they have stuck them in an uncycled tank. We have all been there as we are human and get excited easily at the prospect of having a new tank. I myself have lost dozens of fish in the beginning because I did not know about cycling a tank.
Some people are told (not by me of course) to do lots of water changes in the beginning if your tank is not cycled to keep your fish from getting sick, however I have found that this only stresses the fish out and they become sick anyways. If the water is constantly getting changed before it's cycled, it will never get cycled and you will have sick fish either way.
The problem here is that people say, "oh I will take my chances and if the fish die, oh well I can always get new ones".
When one gets their hands on some really nice fish, it becomes hard to replace them unless money is no object and you buy them online. I have lost several fish and have not been able to replace them because I was lucky to get my hands on them the first time.
No one is going to judge you because you may or may have not known better and put fish in an uncycled tank anyways. But it's important to know if that's what you did so I know where to start diagnosing your fish. I understand this forum is for newbies, that's ok and I don't expect you to know it all when you first start out, like I have said, we have all been there.
But please be honest about your cycle process, how often you change water, how much you are feeding them, if you are mixing fish that don't belong in the same tank, what your chemical readings are if you are taking chemical readings.
This is a learning forum so to speak and you can't learn if you think you know everything, so do your fish a favor and look out for their best interest.
This message is not directed toward any one person.
Good luck with your new tank.
