I have 2 jewels 1 male 1 female. They are both still small but the female is bigger than the male they live in a 22gal (103l) tank with lots of rocks a pice of driftwood and have a airator pump , undergravel filter , a cascade filter thing and a heater. I feed them on floating cichlid sticks and a zebra danio once a week. Im trying to breed them but think i will need a bigger male or smaller female. Can anyone tell me if im doing anything wrong and if i have to get a bigger male or smaller female.

Here is a pic of my tank. sorry about the quality.

How do you know you have a male and a female? It's possible that they are not big enough. OR that you have two males or two females.

oh, I would suggest that you stop feeding them danios. They are most likely a better fish for a feeder than feeder guppies are but there's always the threat of passing diseases to your fish with this method. A good variety of foods will provide them with all the nutrition they need. Try giving them a good basic flake as well as the pellets. And as a treat, maybe something like frozen brine shrimp.

The dorsal fin is not always the best indicator of sex. Also, I was suggesting that you don't feed them other fish. It's actually better for them to eat prepared foods such as the flake and pellets.

Too hard to tell sexes on these guys. The frozen shrimp thing is easy. You either get a package of frozen brine shrimp from the local pet store OR you buy a pack of frozen shrimp in the store (DO NOT get the precooked stuff). Cut into small chunks, freeze what you don't need right away. Let the frozen stuff thaw a short while and feed to the fish.

Then try for the frozen shrimp at the grocery store. You don't have to have frozen for them, it's just a nice treat. Smile
