I have two Jewels that are inseparable and I was wondering how to tell the sex. Does the color of their fins mean anything? My larger one has a yellow tint to its fins and the smaller one has a red tint. Neither is fully colored. They don't really fight so I think they are opposite sex but I also have them in a 30 gal with 8 small Chipokae (just until they are large enough to be put in with my other in the 55 gal). Can anyone tell me the sex?

well ya kow im not sure eighter that is a good question i have 2 jewels one is gold in coler with blue spots & the other is red just beautiful as can be & they are hard to sex, i have heard it has something to do with anil fins but not sure .....sorry not much help to u ...CRAZYFISHLADY

I myself have turquois jewels, I believe a male and a female but no spawning yet. This is what I know about sexing jewels. It's all in the behavior. Paticularly with turquoise jewles, they turn a deep red when spawning. Telling sex on any jewel is very difficult and can't be done by finage or coloring. If you should be able to catch the act of actual egg transfer, then you can tell who is who and afterwards of course by who is carrying. During the spawning before egg transfer, the male will chase the female. Unfortuantly I have looked the net up and down for the same question and this is the same response everytime.

Sexing Juwels is extremely hard.
If you have a mature pair then they will have bred already.
Usually the female has less blue spots but this is a poor indicator.
Do you know the Chipoke are probably the most aggressive Mbuna
you can buy. Hope you have some robust cichlids and a proper m/f
ratio with the Chipoke
